CCCC and Chatham Artists Guild offer Business of Art Course

Creating a Successful Art Business

Presented by Central Carolina Community College (CCCC) & Chatham Artists Guild

Featuring Carol Hewitt

"Many artists love producing art, but have received little training on how to effectively market their work and manage a business," states Carol Hewitt, business woman and wife of noted potter Mark Hewitt. To aid local artists in gaining better business skills, CCCC and the Chatham Artists Guild are offering a four week class, taught by Hewitt, designed to make the business aspects of the artists’ career more interesting, enjoyable and effective.

Carol Hewitt combines the knowledge she has acquired managing and marketing a successful art business for the past 23 years with her experience as a counselor and leadership development consultant. In her Art Business classes and coaching sessions, Hewitt offers artists a non-threatening approach to the business side of being a 'working' artist. "It's got to be manageable and not too painfully dull or we just won't do it", she says of running a business. "My hope is to make the business part easier, so artists can spend more time doing what they love and do best - their art."

The class material will include basic bookkeeping processes, tax information, marketing tips, and web site design. Ms Hewitt will use participants' own art work and websites as case studies to effectively promote themselves and their businesses. Dates for the classes are Wednesday evenings, 6-9pm on Sept. 6, 13, 20, 27. All four classes will cost $40. The four classes will be a start of a series of classes for artists on the many aspects of running a successful art business.

Central Carolina Community College provides life-long educational opportunities consistent with area students’ interests and abilities, prepares graduates capable of acquiring and applying knowledge and succeeding in the regional and global community, and serves as a positive economic, social, and cultural catalyst in our diverse communities.

The Chatham Artists Guild annually holds the Chatham Studio Tour, one of the oldest in North Carolina. The Chatham Tour is a prototype for other area studio tours, and a highly respected art venue. The 2006 Tour will be December 2nd and 3rd, and 9th and 10th.
