2006 Chatham Studio Tour

Chatham Studio Tour Artist
Gains International Acclaim

Chatham Studio Tour artist Edwin White has been selected for a nationally known exhibition for their outstanding work.

Judges for the Sixth Annual Florida Outdoor Sculpture chose twenty pieces from one hundred and seven entries of fifty artists representing twenty-one states, Canada and Mexico. Of the twenty pieces selected, five are works by North Carolina artists, including White's, a metal sculptor from the Chatham Studio Tour, as well as one by Tour artist Gretchen Lothrop. The exhibition runs from March 2006 through February 2007, in Lakeland and Winter Haven, Florida.

White also has works placed in two major hotels—one last year in the Hilton Hotel, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and one last fall for the Hotel Preston in Nashville, TN. Examples of his work are exhibited on his web site, www.EdwinWhiteDesigns.com.

The Chatham Studio Tour is one of the oldest in North Carolina, a highly respected prototype for other area studio tours. Established in 1992, participation in the tour has grown from 32 artists in its first year, to nearly 60 artists in 2005. The tour is an artist-run event of the Chatham Artists Guild. It is a high quality art venue where the public can experience the personal environments and creative processes of professional artists and the thrill of owning original art.

The Chatham Studio Tour is now seeking new artists for the 2006 Tour. Artists for the 14th Annual Tour will be selected in March. Applications as well as information and images are available now on our website www.ChathamStudioTour.com.

Chatham Studio Tour Artist
Receives National Recognition

Chatham Studio Tour artist Joel Hunnicut has been recognized for his outstanding art. Hunnicut, a wood artist from Siler City, NC, has been named a finalist in the 2006 Niche Awards for the piece entitled Lidded Urn in Wood: Turned category, by  Niche Magazine.

Hunnicut is a wood turner who uses “segmented” construction as a primary design tool.  This process involves the precise cutting of many small pieces of wood and then assembling them into a rough form, which then is turned to shape on a wood lathe.  He often uses dyes and inks to transform these turned shapes into a rainbow of color.  His work can be seen at www.JoelHunnicut.com.

Less than two hundred pieces were chosen as finalists in this year’s competition from more than a thousand entries submitted by the nation’s most brilliant and innovative artists.

The Niche Awards program began in 1990 to recognize the outstanding creative achievements of American craft artists who produce work for craft galleries and retail stores.  Judging is based on technical excellence, both in surface design and form, market viability and distinct quality of unique, original and creative thought. The awards program is sponsored by NICHE Magazine, the exclusive trade publication for North American retailers of American craft.

Wins Award, place in show

Chatham County artist Gretchen Lothrop’s sculpture  “A Subtle Miracle” has won the Judge’s Choice Best in Show award at the 2nd Annual Southeastern Regional Sculpture. Competition at the Aiken County Historical Museum in Aiken SC.  The ten foot tall stainless steel sculpture was built at Ms. Lothrop’s Studio at Elf Way (www.studioatelfway.com) near Pittsboro, NC and will be on display in Aiken through April 2006.

Ms. Lothrop’s 14 foot tall stainless steel piece “Grove” was one of twenty sculptures selected in a nation wide arts call for the year long exhibition in the 6th Annual Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition curated by the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland Florida. (www.PolkMuseumofArt.org) Of the twenty selected sculptors, four are from North Carolina – certainly a mark of the vitality of the arts in our state.
