What leads me to make utilitarian and whimsical scuptures?  It may be the surprise that comes when people say, “Whatever were you thinking when you made that?”  The answer for utilitarian pieces is easy. Potters have been making plates, bowls, mugs, storage jars, etc., for millennia.

For the whimsical sculptures there are three basic reasons. One is that which drives almost all artists; the desire to have the observer react to the art.  The second is that they make me laugh.  The third is that I can place structures in my art that are not easily observed, though when discovered create a greater attachment to the piece.  I take great joy in being a potter.
